The International Museum of Surgical Science is in the early development phase of an exhibition examining the topic of gender transition. At this stage, the Museum is developing this exhibition with three key content objectives in mind:
(1) To detail and demystify the varied and sophisticated medical and surgical techniques involved in sex reassignment / gender confirmation, including hormone replacement therapies and genital modification surgery.
(2) To present a multicultural and historically informed perspective on the diverse range of sex and gender identities and presentations, including transgender, gender fluid, gender nonconforming, and gender non-binary, among others.
(3) To present a social account of the transgender experience, emphasizing the ways in which race, income and access to health care deeply impact the lives of trans people.
The Museum is currently exploring partners and seeking financial support for this project.
