The International Museum of Surgical Science is pleased to welcome Dr. Loren Schechter as a Scientific Advisor on its forthcoming gender transition exhibit. Dr. Schechter brings an extensive background and knowledge base in gender affirming surgical care, and will advise on the exhibit’s medico-surgical content.
Dr. Schechter is a board-certified plastic surgeon and Director of the Center for Gender Confirmation Surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital. He serves on the board of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and was the local host for the 2007 WPATH meeting. In addition, Dr. Schechter helped to author the 7th Edition of The Standards of Care, and serves on the editorial board for two transgender medical journals. He won the 2013 Illinois State Bar Association Award for Community Service for his advocacy efforts for the transgender community, was recognized by the National Center for Lesbian Rights for his care of transgender individuals, and has authored the first surgical atlas concerning Surgical Management of Transgender Individuals. He is also a founding member and president-elect of The American Society for Gender Surgeons.
Dr. Schechter received his medical degree, with honors, from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency in general and plastic surgery as well as a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals. While at the University of Chicago, Dr. Schechter was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated as The Outstanding Student in Surgery.
