SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: The Japan Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of our new Japan Room exhibit – celebrating Japanese medicine\, history\, and culture! \nAbout the exhibit:\nThe Japan Gallery at the International Museum of Surgical Science explores the history of Japanese surgery and medicine through art\, objects\, medical technology\, and the individuals who shaped the field. \nAt the center of the gallery is a group of Nihonga paintings depicting important figures and episodes in Japanese medical history. Among them are works relating to physician Hanaoka Seishū (1760–1835) and his pioneering experiments with general anesthesia\, including a depiction of Seishū attending to a female patient and a painting of the medicinal plants associated with the anesthetic he developed. Through these works\, medical history is communicated not only through scientific instruments and written records\, but also through visual culture and artistic representation. \nThe paintings are presented alongside calligraphy connected to Seishū\, portraits and commemorative plaques honoring Japanese surgeons associated with the Japan Section of the International College of Surgeons\, historical medical technology\, and other objects documenting developments in Japanese medicine. \nOriginally established through the generosity of the Japan Section of the International College of Surgeons\, the gallery reflects a long history of exchange between Japanese medical professionals and an international surgical community. The renewed gallery preserves that history while inviting new research into the people\, artworks\, objects\, and stories represented in the collection. \nTogether\, these materials illuminate relationships among medicine\, art\, knowledge\, and cultural history\, while recognizing Japan’s contributions to the development of surgery and medical practice. \nOrder of Events \n6:00–6:30 PM — Arrival\, Reception & Gallery Viewing \n6:30–6:40 PM — Welcome & Introduction by Mami Takahashi\, Curator of Exhibitions and Special Projects\, IMSS \nBrief welcome and introduction to the renewed Japan Gallery\, its Nihonga paintings and medical collection\, Hanaoka Seishū\, the history of the ICS Japan Section relationship\, and the developing vision for Japanese art\, medicine\, education\, and cultural programming at IMSS. \n6:40–7:10 PM — Koto Performance Yumi-san + additional musicians \n7:10–7:25 PM — Reception Guests can get refreshments\, visit the galleries\, and move toward the Hall of Immortals. \n7:25–7:45 PM — Large-Brush Calligraphy Performance by Hekiun Oda \n7:45–9:00 PM — Open Reception & Museum Experience \n\nJapan Gallery: gallery viewing + a small participatory origami station centered on symbols of peace\, healing\, and well-being\nHall of Immortals: viewing Oda-sensei’s completed calligraphy and conversation with the artist\nHall of Murals: reception/social area and second koto music\nJapan in Practice galleries: exhibition viewing\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite
