Echoes of the Collection: Artists in Conversation

May 9, 2025 – June 22, 2025

The International Museum of Surgical Science, in collaboration with the School of Visual Arts and the Illustration Program at Columbia College Chicago, proudly presents Echoes of the Collection: Artists in Conversation. This dynamic exhibition features illustrations by current students and recent alumni who were inspired by the museum’s archive of medical artifacts, surgical instruments, and anatomical illustrations. Through a contemporary lens, these artists reimagine and reinterpret the museum's historic collection, using both traditional and digital media to explore the intersection of science, storytelling, and art.

Illustration is more than image-making — it is a discipline rooted in research, narrative, and the development of personal voice. As an educator in this field, I emphasize not only technical skills and best practices, but also the discovery of compelling stories that drive meaningful visual communication. For emerging illustrators, uncovering those stories is both a challenge and an opportunity. This exhibition stems from that very journey: a hands-on, research-driven experience in which students engaged directly with the museum’s collection. Being able to explore these artifacts in person allowed them to connect with real histories and transform them into visual narratives that resonate today.

Institutions like the International Museum of Surgical Science play a vital role in nurturing creative exploration. By bridging historical context with artistic innovation, they provide fertile ground for education, dialogue, and inspiration. As a practicing artist and educator based in Chicago, I am deeply grateful for spaces that value interdisciplinary collaboration and support the next generation of visual storytellers.
