In artist Vincent Tiley’s 2016 video “Material Eyes,” the artist’s mother operates a surgical robot named the Da Vinci to explore and manipulate his face. The act of seeing becomes an invasive physical act when the eye of the camera is given mechanical hands that prod and poke the artist like a specimen. Perhaps some sort of emotion or careful intent is translated through the machine from the delicate gestures of the artist’s mother. (11 minutes, screens continuously on a loop).
Vincent Tiley lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y. Tiley received his MFA in 2013 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited at Elee.mosynary Gallery, Chicago; City Bird Gallery, NYC; Eyebeam, NYC; Grace Exhibition Space, NYC; Zones Contemporary Art Fair, Miami; Bushwick does Basel, NYC; Rapid Pulse International Performance Festival, Chicago; and New Capital, Chicago. Tiley is represented by Christopher Stout Gallery in New York City.
This screening is presented as part of the IMSS Contemporary Arts Program. IMSS supports a commitment to contemporary art and artists through exhibitions and programs that use the frame of contemporary artistic practice to examine new perspectives in surgical science and our relationship to the body.
