Exhibit Opening: The Japan Room
October 23 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us to celebrate the opening of our new Japan Room exhibit – celebrating Japanese medicine, history, and culture!
About the exhibit:
The Japan Gallery at the International Museum of Surgical Science explores the history of Japanese surgery and medicine through art, objects, medical technology, and the individuals who shaped the field.
At the center of the gallery is a group of Nihonga paintings depicting important figures and episodes in Japanese medical history. Among them are works relating to physician Hanaoka Seishū (1760–1835) and his pioneering experiments with general anesthesia, including a depiction of Seishū attending to a female patient and a painting of the medicinal plants associated with the anesthetic he developed. Through these works, medical history is communicated not only through scientific instruments and written records, but also through visual culture and artistic representation.
The paintings are presented alongside calligraphy connected to Seishū, portraits and commemorative plaques honoring Japanese surgeons associated with the Japan Section of the International College of Surgeons, historical medical technology, and other objects documenting developments in Japanese medicine.
Originally established through the generosity of the Japan Section of the International College of Surgeons, the gallery reflects a long history of exchange between Japanese medical professionals and an international surgical community. The renewed gallery preserves that history while inviting new research into the people, artworks, objects, and stories represented in the collection.
Together, these materials illuminate relationships among medicine, art, knowledge, and cultural history, while recognizing Japan’s contributions to the development of surgery and medical practice.
