Frida Kahlo was one of the greatest painters to hail from Mexico. She claimed
to have been born the same year as the Mexican Revolution, she was born three
years earlier but it might as well have been true as she remained a communist
all her life.
When she was impaled in a bus accident in 1925, she was bedridden for a year.
Her parents put a mirror above her bed and gave her an easel. During those long
hours in bed she taught herself to paint by painting the subject she knew best
– herself.
Frida Kahlo was long eclipsed by her husband Diego Rivera who was the more
famous painter during their lifetimes. Now she is considered an icon in her own
right. Her favorite perfume was Shalimar by Guerlain. This perfume was inspired
by her signature scent and her colorful life.
They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I
painted my own reality.
